Glutathione 1500 mg — the cell's master antioxidant, at laboratory scale.
Glutathione is the single most abundant intracellular antioxidant and the reference redox compound across virtually all of cell biology. This 1500 mg vial is sized for laboratories running redox buffers, culture supplementation or extended oxidative stress protocols.
What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, distinguished by an unusual gamma-peptide bond at the glutamate residue that makes it resistant to conventional peptidase cleavage. Its reactive cysteine thiol is the functional centre: it cycles between the reduced (GSH) and oxidised disulfide (GSSG) forms, and the ratio between them is the canonical measure of cellular redox state. Beyond direct radical scavenging, it serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and S-transferases, participates in phase II conjugation chemistry, and contributes to protein glutathionylation as a reversible regulatory modification. Few molecules are as central to so many branches of cell biology.
Research interest
- Oxidative stress models — the reference antioxidant in redox-challenge experiments.
- GSH/GSSG redox ratio — used as the standard readout of cellular redox status.
- Detoxification chemistry — studied for its role in conjugation and xenobiotic handling pathways.
- Protein S-glutathionylation — of interest to researchers examining reversible thiol-based regulation.
- Buffer and assay preparation — widely applied as a reducing agent in biochemical and chromatographic workflows.

Handling & storage
The free thiol that makes glutathione useful also makes it vulnerable: in solution it oxidises readily to the disulfide, especially at neutral to alkaline pH, at warm temperatures and in the presence of trace transition metals. Keep the vial sealed and dry, equilibrate it to ambient temperature before opening, and reseal promptly. Prepare solutions fresh under your laboratory's validated protocol where redox state matters, and consider degassed solvent and a chelator in the buffer to suppress metal-catalysed oxidation. Solutions turning yellow or developing a sulfurous odour should be discarded. Store any stock aliquots frozen, in single-use volumes, and protected from light and air.
