Bacteriostatic Water 10 ml — the reconstitution standard for multi-withdrawal laboratory work
Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The preservative is what separates it from ordinary sterile water: it inhibits bacterial growth after the vial has first been entered, which is what makes repeated withdrawals from a single vial possible under proper aseptic technique.
What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water for injection to which a bacteriostatic agent has been added — in this case benzyl alcohol at 0.9%. Plain sterile water is single-use by nature: once the stopper is pierced, there is nothing to prevent microbial proliferation in what is otherwise an ideal growth medium. The benzyl alcohol addresses that directly, giving the vial a usable service life across multiple entries and making it the default diluent wherever a reconstituted preparation needs to be drawn more than once.
Where it is used
- Reconstitution of lyophilised material — the standard diluent for returning freeze-dried powders to solution, according to the instructions of the product being prepared.
- Dilution — used to bring concentrated preparations to a working concentration.
- Multi-withdrawal work — the bacteriostatic agent supports repeated access to a single vial when strict aseptic technique is observed.
- General laboratory preparation — a clean, preservative-stabilised aqueous base free of the particulates and ionic content of non-pharmaceutical water.
Note that benzyl alcohol is not compatible with every preparation; some compounds are specified for use with plain sterile or unpreserved water. Always defer to the instructions supplied with the product being reconstituted.
Specifications

Handling & storage
Store at controlled room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Do not freeze. Before use, inspect the vial: the solution must be clear and colourless, free of visible particulates, and the vial itself intact with its seal undamaged. Discard any vial showing cloudiness, discolouration or a compromised stopper. Once opened, follow the storage and in-use period specified by the manufacturer of the product with which it is being used, and always employ proper aseptic technique when accessing the vial.
