What is Semax?

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide built on the ACTH(4-7) fragment with a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide extension added at the C-terminus. That extension is the engineering insight: it markedly slows enzymatic degradation compared with the bare fragment while the truncated ACTH core retains neurotropic character without the corticotropic activity of the full hormone. Research attention centres on its interaction with neurotrophin systems — particularly BDNF and NGF expression — and on monoaminergic modulation. It is also notable as one of the small Peptides documented to reach the central nervous system, which is what makes it practical as a CNS research tool at all.

Handling & storage

Short peptides such as Semax are stable for extended periods in the lyophilised state provided they stay dry, cold and dark. Keep the vial sealed and refrigerated, and equilibrate it to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation forming on the hygroscopic cake. Reconstitute under the receiving laboratory's own validated protocol: run solvent slowly down the inner wall, swirl gently and let the cake dissolve without agitation or vortexing. Neuropeptide solutions adsorb readily to ordinary plastics and are vulnerable to proteolysis, so use low-binding vessels, hold aliquots frozen and dark in single-use volumes, and thaw each once only.
