LL-37 5 mg — the human body's own antimicrobial peptide
LL-37 is not a designed molecule. It is the only human cathelicidin, an evolved component of innate immunity, and one of the most intensively studied antimicrobial Peptides in the literature.
What is LL-37?
LL-37 is a 37-residue cationic peptide cleaved from the human cathelicidin precursor hCAP18, named for its two leading leucine residues. Its amphipathic helical structure — positively charged on one face, hydrophobic on the other — is what allows it to interact with the negatively charged membranes characteristic of microbial cells. But its research profile extends well beyond direct antimicrobial action: LL-37 is also studied as a signalling molecule influencing chemotaxis, wound repair and immune cell recruitment, making it a genuinely multifunctional host-defence peptide.
Research interest
- Antimicrobial mechanism — studied for membrane-disruptive activity against bacterial, fungal and viral targets in laboratory systems.
- Innate immunity — investigated as an immunomodulatory signal influencing chemotaxis and immune cell recruitment.
- Wound-healing models — of interest to researchers examining re-epithelialisation and angiogenic signalling in tissue repair.
- Biofilm research — referenced in literature exploring peptide activity against structured microbial communities.
- Peptide design templates — widely used as the natural scaffold from which synthetic antimicrobial peptides are derived.
Cationic amphipathic peptides such as LL-37 bind readily to glass and plastic surfaces and are sensitive to ionic strength, which makes both material purity and thoughtful handling essential to reproducible results. Low-binding labware is standard practice in this class of work.
Specifications
- Content: 5 mg of active substance per vial
- Form: Lyophilised powder (vial)
- Purity: Pharmaceutical-grade, batch-tested and lot-traceable
- Presentation: Sealed, tamper-evident single vial
- Storage: -20 °C sealed; 2-8 °C short-term
Handling & storage
Keep the sealed vial frozen at -20 °C for extended storage, or at 2-8 °C for short-term laboratory handling. Avoid direct light, moisture ingress and repeated warming and cooling cycles. Store sealed, dry and frozen. Warm to room temperature before opening. Cationic peptides adsorb to surfaces, so laboratories typically use low-binding vessels and prepare solutions fresh per their validated protocol with an appropriate sterile diluent. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw and prolonged exposure to high-salt conditions during storage.
