SS-31 10 mg — the mitochondria-targeted peptide
Most compounds diffuse through a cell and hope for the best. SS-31 concentrates itself in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and that targeting is its defining scientific feature.
What is SS-31?
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide belonging to the Szeto-Schiller class of mitochondria-targeted compounds. Its alternating aromatic-cationic sequence gives it an unusual property: it accumulates selectively in the inner mitochondrial membrane and associates with cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid of that membrane. Because cardiolipin organisation is central to electron transport chain efficiency, SS-31 is studied as a tool for investigating how membrane architecture governs mitochondrial bioenergetics — a mechanism distinct from conventional antioxidant scavenging.
Research interest
- Cardiolipin interaction — studied for how binding to this inner-membrane phospholipid influences cristae structure and electron transport organisation.
- Mitochondrial bioenergetics — investigated in research examining ATP production efficiency and respiratory chain function.
- Oxidative stress models — of interest to researchers exploring reactive oxygen species generation at the mitochondrial source.
- Targeted delivery chemistry — a leading example of sequence-driven subcellular targeting without a conventional transport moiety.
- Cellular ageing research — referenced in literature on mitochondrial dysfunction and age-related bioenergetic decline.
As a short cationic tetrapeptide, SS-31 is relatively robust compared with larger Proteins, but its charged character makes it prone to surface adsorption — low-binding labware is standard practice in mitochondrial assay work using this compound.
Specifications
- Content: 10 mg of active compound per vial
- Form: Lyophilised powder (vial)
- Purity: Pharmaceutical-grade, batch-tested and lot-traceable
- Presentation: Sealed, tamper-evident single vial
- Storage: -20 °C sealed; 2-8 °C short-term
Handling & storage
Keep the sealed vial frozen at -20 °C for extended storage, or at 2-8 °C for short-term laboratory handling. Avoid direct light, moisture ingress and repeated warming and cooling cycles. Store sealed, dry and frozen. Bring to room temperature before opening. Reconstitution should use an appropriate sterile diluent per the laboratory's validated method; because cationic Peptides adsorb to glass and standard plastics, low-binding vessels are recommended. Aliquot solutions and refrigerate, minimising freeze-thaw.
